Someone once asked Spurgeon, "How can you reconcile the absolute sovereignty of God and the responsibility of men?" He replied, "I do not need to reconcile two friends. They are both taught in the Word of God." Without doubt, they are both taught in the Word of God, and you cannot take either doctrine too far. I realize those who hold to the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation will be denounced as "hyper-calvinists," but that does not bother me. The Bible teaches that "Salvation is of the Lord." If a man is saved, all the glory goes to God. He literally elected who would be saved before time began. Christ came as the surety for those elect ones and completely paid for their sins on Calvary's tree, and the Holy Spirit gives every one of them the new-birth, thus enabling them to repent, trust Christ, and persevere in the faith until the end. From election to glorification, salvation is by grace. Man's works and will do not enter into salvation. God gets ALL the credit! You cannot take this too far or be too extreme. Salvation is either all of grace, or it is of man's works. We know the Bible teaches "all of grace."
It is equally true that all men are held responsible for their actions. If you are not saved, it is not because God did not elect you or Christ did not die for you. It is because you willfully chose to rebel against God, and reject the Lord Jesus Christ and His great salvation. You cannot in any way lay the blame at God's feet. He would have saved you if you would have come to Him seeking mercy! But you refused. The sovereignty of God does not negate the responsibility of the believer in this life. I am to seek to obey everything He commands in His Word. I am to give myself to seeking Him with all my heart! I am commanded to be His witness to all men, to seek the salvation of all men, just as if their salvation was dependent on me telling them, all the while knowing that only God can save them. We are told that we will reap what we sow, and that is true!
Don't trouble yourself over reconciling the two truths. You do not need to reconcile friends. They are both true! Believe and rest in the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation; and give yourself to your responsibility to seek and save Christ in the place God has put you!
