There are many pictures of the relationship between Christ and the Church that He purchased with His own blood. But they all have one thing in common, they are all relationships that involve great devotion! True believers are devoted to the Lord Jesus Christ. In real devotion there are elements of love, respect, trust, honor and commitment. In Israel, the firstborn and the firstfruits were "devoted" or "dedicated" to God. "Everything devoted in Israel shall be thine." (Num 18:14) Likewise, all who are born again as the fruit of Christs redeeming work are devoted and dedicated to God.
Gods people are likened to soldiers in a great army with the Lord Jesus Christ as the Captain. As soldiers we are to be loyal to our Captain and devoted to Him. Thus devoted to His cause and His glory.
Also they are likened to wives being married to Christ. They are His Bride and love. He is devoted to us, having loved us and given Himself for us; and we are devoted to Him above all others. We have pledged ourselves to Him and Him alone. We are to "reverence" Him with all honor. The Psalmist said, "Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear." (Psa 119:38) We are to be faithful to Him and we are to cling to Him with all devotion.
As devotees to Christ, we belong to Him. We are for His use and purpose. We are to put all trust and confidence in Him. We plead His blood and rely upon His righteousness before God. Our devotion is to be marked by obedience to Him and no doubt the world will call this devotion to Christ "fanaticism." If we are devoted to His Word, devoted to His worship, devoted to His people and devoted to His glory, we shall be called "zealots" and "fanatics." But can we be less that totally devoted to Him who has so completely and sacrificially devoted Himself to us? Our devotion is to be without shame, without fear, without hesitation, without reservation and without rival. The Apostle Paul said, "For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's... and be not the servants of men." It is still as it has always been, "every devoted thing is most holy unto the LORD." If Christ be the Captain of our salvation and we be married to Him, will we not show ourselves to be devoted to Him?
